contemporary history days of Braunau COURAGE OF ONE'S CONVICTIONS AND RESISTANCE WITHIN DICTATORSHIPS Braunau am Inn, Kultur im Gugg, 27th to 29th September, 2002 "Too few Righteous" complained the well-known historian Erika Weinzierl in her book of the same name written two decades ago. The Israeli memorial site, Yad Vashem honoured non-Jews who saved Jews and thereby risked their life as Righteous Among the Nations. There was no doubt that those who hid or protected Jews risked their lives and lived in fear. Many were tortured or murdered in concentration camps. However, there were German citizens living under the tyranny of the Third Reich who resisted and aided in the rescue of Jews. To date near twenty thousand Yad Vashem has honoured Righteous Among the Nations. Oskar Schindler became the best-known "Righteous" resulting from the exposure he was given in Steven Spielberg's film "Schindler's List". Although, he saved some 700 to 800 Jewish men from the camp Gross-Rosen and some 300 Jewish women from Auschwitz, he regretted not having saved more Jews. Other rescuers wished they could have helped more people survive. The Eleventh Annual Braunau History Symposium will examine two Righteous Among the Nations citizens of the German Reich: Anton Schmid and Josef Schleich.Recently, indepth articles about Josef Schmid were published in association with the exhibit, The Wehrmacht.. Recently, the German Armed Forces honoured Josef Schmid. The film "Feldwebel Schmid" produced in 1972, chronicles the little known life of Viennese born Josef Schmid the soldier of the Wehrmacht. In the past few decades, the Scholl siblings from Munich and Franz Jägerstätter from the nearby St. Radegund have stimulated discussions and critical analysis throughout Austria. The 1971 film "Der Fall Jägerstätter" ("The case of Jägerstätter") directed by Axel Corti initiated an examination of individual's moral responsibility and courage to care. The goal of the symposium is to examine lessons from the past with a view to instilling a sense of equality and respect for the dignity of all peoples. |
